Working Mum Guilt

Sometimes mom life can be a kick in the guts. I like to pretend that I have everything under control and can easily handle working full time whilst looking after my 2-year-old son and studying uni part-time but that is not always the case.

Last night I face timed my little man during a break at university while he was laying in bed with his father reading his favourite bear book. Everything was going perfectly fine until he said he was sad I was at school and not reading with him. I had not seen him since I gave him a kiss goodbye as he headed out the door for childcare that morning at 7am.

A full 12 hours had passed without me holding my baby and I knew I would not get to spend any further awake time with him that evening as he would be fast asleep when I arrived home.

It broke my heart, I had to struggle not to burst into tears right then and there. A voice inside my head started to let me know that I was a horrible parent, that I choose my career over my child and am now stupidly bringing another beautiful soul into the world only to be raised by people other than me.

I know it’s not true and I am fully aware that the sacrifices I make today will only serve to benefit my family in the long run but sometimes it is hard to quieten that inner critic, that inner mum shammer that goes out of her way to criticise every decision I make.

I am sure I am not the only mother that suffers from working mum guilt, I have a feeling that each and every mother is at some point or another doubting her abilities whether she is a stay at home mother or a working mother but it is important that we don’t let this negativity seep into our parenting. When having a particularly tough day there are a few tips to keep in mind:

Plan and prioritise your time

We have all had one of those mornings where it seems everything is just going wrong, the type of a morning that throws your whole day off, you know the one…..

Trying to leave the house for childcare drop off before work and struggling just to get out the front door, as you shove a spare change of clothes into your toddlers bag, search for their Thomas the tank engine water bottle because your toddler won’t drink out of anything else, the water bottle you swear was left on the table last night but is now nowhere to be found, all whilst your little one screams that they want to wear their green sandals, not the blue ones you put them in.

Once you have lived through one of those mornings it becomes apparent that no longer can things be spontaneous, no longer can you just play it by ear! Get organised, pack the childcare bag before bed, lay out the clothes your little one wants to wear the next day and let them choose their shoes. Set your alarm clock early so you have time in the morning for mini breakdowns. Plan your days, weeks and even months out in advance, invest in a family calendar so everything is listed and you are aware of every possible event that needs to be prepared for.

Outsource tasks if possible

If you are lucky enough to be in the financial position to afford it, outsource all your unnecessary jobs. Hire a cleaner to come in once a fortnight and scrub your house, purchase a robot vacuum that will clean the floor automatically while you are at work, sign up for meal delivery services. If there is any way that you can remove any extra jobs that stress you out and limit the quality time with your family then, by all means, outsource them and don’t feel guilty. Let’s be honest who wouldn’t love having someone else cook them dinner after they arrived home from work.

Be fully there for your children when you can

When it is time for family time, ensure that they have your full attention. Turn off the television, put the iPhone down, remove anything that may distract you from your children and stay in the moment. Pull out toys that don’t require power, sit down at the table and draw pictures together, think about your favourite family memories as a child and try to recreate them with your own children.

However occasionally our work commitments may mean that we are not in the same place as our family, if this is the case then facetime your children whilst they are doing something you can join in on, buy 2 of the same book and read the book over the phone while your child lays in bed following along with their version. Don’t be afraid to show your children just how much you miss them if you are away and how excited you are to come home as soon as possible.

Use your support team as much as possible

There is nothing more special than the bond between grandparents and their grandbabies. Use this relationship to your advantage, I am sure if you asked your parents or your parents in law if they could look after your children every so often they would jump at the chance. Don’t forget to rely on friends when you need them, just be sure to return the favour when they need to lean on you.

Look after yourself

Make sure you spend time looking after yourself, you can’t be your best as a mother or at work if you are not okay. Evenings, after the little ones have gone to bed, is a great time to schedule in a bit of self-care, take some time to meditate, read a good book, do some yoga or find something relaxing that you really enjoy.

Do you suffer from working mum guilt?

What are some of the ways you combat this feeling?

Work / Life Balance

Some days it can feel like it is all or nothing workwise, I know I can occasionally arrive at the end of the week feeling like I have done nothing but go to work, come home, go to bed, get up and go to work again.

I feel like when my work / life balance starts to slip things can start spiralling, housework doesn’t get done, eating well starts to become less of a priority and working out just doesn’t happen. I also feel that I start to feel more overtired and burnt out if I let the scales slide too far into the work zone.

I work hard to keep my work life and my personal life in check, having a healthy dose of both each day inspires me to get the best out of myself in all aspects. It is incredibly important that we put focus on ourselves and I know that being a Boss Girl can sometimes mean that there are certain work priorities that need to be maintained but you should never allow that to overtake your life.

Below are a few rules I try to stick to in order to keep my work life and personal life as balanced as possible, these are just guidelines that I use to set up each day, however, there are days where everything goes out the window and I have to react on the fly but for most of my days I try to stay true to these rules.

Understand what you want to accomplish each day

When I wake up in the morning, I normally take say a minute or so just to imagine how I would like my day to run. I think about the tasks that I need to get done both at home and at work and imagine the best possible scenario taking place. Taking a few minutes to take stock of what is required for the day gives me a guide that I can hold myself accountable for throughout the day.

The smell of coffee in the morning starts my wake up so I find I always let my brain run a little wild with plans for the day when I am drinking my first cup.

Plan your day

It will be no surprise here for all my regular readers but the first thing I do once I am all showered and ready is to see what I have planned for the day. I keep a weekly diary which includes personal appointments and daily to do’s, I check in each morning to see what I have scheduled or what I need to plan my day around.

The minute I get into the office I start planning my day, I take a few moments to get prepared for the day ahead and start noting down the tasks that I want to accomplish. If I have a personal appointment that day, say a doctors appointment at 2pm I will plan what I need to have completed before that time and what can be outsourced or left till tomorrow.

Stick to your plan

I like to give myself deadlines for tasks and work-related items, there is no point in planning your day out if you don’t follow through with the plan. Giving myself deadlines means that I know I will have something completed by a certain date or time and I can then plan further related work.

Stay focused and in the moment

This can be challenging with work if I have a million different tasks and a million different people asking for my time or needing me to chase something for them but I try to stay focused and complete the task at hand. If there are other things that need to accomplish I will write them down and schedule them after I have completed what I am doing that way I am not continuously starting different projects, not completing the majority of them and then getting held up at work.

Leave work at work

This can be a hard one for many Boss Girls, especially when you work from home but when clock off time arrives it is important to switch your brain off work mode and slip into home mode. I can struggle immensely with this, especially as I am always on call but I try to only answer phone calls that are urgent and stay off my work email outside of work hours. Do not turn your computer on when you finish work, if it’s not finished by cut off time it can be the first job accomplished the next morning!

View family time as a non-negotiable

From the hours of 5:30pm till 7pm I am uncontactable, this is family time when we go for our evening walk, have play time, cook and eat dinner, then its Levi’s shower time and reading in bed. I think of this time as I would any other important meeting, I am unavailable, there is nothing in the world that is more important to me than spending quality time with my family, I think it is vital to book in times outside of work for family the way we would book a meeting with our boss, there is no skirting around this meeting, there is nothing that could be more important than this meeting and you need to be fully present at that time.

Don’t waste free time

After family time I like to get down to business, I think running a household involves organisation and precision. Each night of the week will involve a few small cleaning requirements, that way things are always getting done and I don’t feel that housework is getting on top of me.

We follow a cleaning schedule that is quick and easy, my husband knows what is required each night so there are no surprises and if there is a night where we just don’t have the time or neither are feeling well it is the one area thing that we know we can let slide a little.

There is alway’s room for Me Time

Before bedtime is always Me Time, this is the most important aspect when keeping a good work life / personal life balance. I need to make sure that at the end of the day I take whatever time I have available even if it is only 10 minutes and treated myself to something relaxing. This often takes the form of relaxing in the shower for 20 minutes listening to an audiobook or sitting alone in our bedroom and meditating for 10 minutes. I have also been all about a husband made hot chocolate (they taste better when he makes them) and 1/2 hour reading my monthly book club book in bed!

Spending this time on myself I often feel slightly spoilt that I have this luxury but then I remind that I make time to treat myself and if I don’t feel completely present and comfortable in my own skin then I am really not doing myself any real justice.

Set a bedtime

I am the type of person that thrives on 8 hours of sleep, I know that if I want the best out of the day I need to be well refreshed so I stick to my bedtime. If I have tasks to get done in the morning and I want to wake up early at 5am to get a jump start on that date then I am in bed with my phones switched on sleep mode by 9pm.

I use sleep mode on my iPhone with my morning wake up alarm preset, that way any calls will go straight to voice mail and I fall asleep knowing that I won’t be bothered.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Don’t forget that sometimes life just happens and things are out of our control. If you have a bad day, week or month where it seems like your balance is completely off, take some time to relax, readjust your schedule and plan then start again!

No one is perfect, as long as you are living in the moment as much as practical you should be fine.

By ensuring you that you look after yourself and try to best balance both work and personal responsibilities you are more likely to develop healthy and positive practices.

Do you struggle with your work and personal life balance?

What do you do to help separate your time?

Baby Hunt 2.0 Week 31

How far along: 31 weeks 6 days

Baby H2.0: Weighs 1.5kg and is 41 cm from crown to rump, and is about the size of an asparagus she was actually measuring a little further along at the scan on Wednesday.

Gender: Baby Hunt 2.0 is a GIRL!!!

Weight gain:+ 5.9 kg since we found out, it is steadily increasing which I was told it would at this stage. We where told she looks to be around 2 kgs at the moment which is helping me feel a bit better about the weight gain.

Sleep: I just cant seem to get comfortable and then when I have finally found a comfortable spot and fallen asleep I suddenly wake up constantly to go to the bathroom.

Symptoms: I am constantly feeling like I need to go pee! I feel like I spend half my day at work just walk to and from the bathroom the whole time.

Cravings / Aversions: Umm nothing really at this stage, I feel like I have been craving pizza but they may just be my indulgent tummy wanting pizza rather than an actual craving.

Maternity Clothes: I am at the home stretch now so I feel if I can just make my regular clothes last a little bit longer I will be okay. I have been wearing a lot of my work shirts open with plain shirts underneath to avoid loosing buttons in public.

Exercise: Ha Ha just walking up the stairs to my office each day is currently a work out!

Mood: Totally over the whole pregnancy feeling but super excited to meet her and also incredibly overwhelmed but I know everything will be amazing when she arrives.

Wedding rings: Off –  side note my engagement ring broke and I still haven’t fixed it which is why I am not wearing any rings at the moment

Belly Button in or out: It’s currently an innie, was last pregnancy as well so I am assuming it will stay the same.

Movement: She has been moving a lot more lately, the movements are less sharp and feel like she is just constantly moving around, I think she is running out of room.

What I miss: Being able to go for a nice relaxing walk, I miss out evening family walk routines and we have had to cut out going to the markets on Saturday’s as its just too far for me to walk.

Preeclampsia: No real signs just a little bit of regular swelling.

Best moment of the week: My mum and sister came with me to our latest ultrasound appointment on Wednesday. She has moved head down and is ready and waiting to go!

Worst moment of the week: I had to get more bloods again this week and after she took all the bloods I went to leave only to realise she missed a vial so had to have a second needle, I think I am doing pretty well if that is the worst moment of my week.

What I am looking forward to: Seeing Levi in his suit at my sisters wedding in March, he tried on suits today with my mother and sister as he will be the ring bearer. I am so proud of my little gentleman.

There you have the week 31 recap, I am really starting to get excited and I just cannot wait for her to arrive. I have spoken with my doctors and we will most likely be induced around the 36-week mark.

Where you induced? How did that go?

Celebrate Yourself this Valentine’s Day

Traditionally Valentine’s Day is about celebrating and spoiling your significant other but I think its about time we start really celebrating the one true hero around here. Ourselves!

Whether you are in a relationship, single, friends with benefits, not really sure what is going on, not into labels or just seeing where things take you. Your relationship or sex life doesn’t need a special day, lets put all that energy into validating yourself and your accomplishments.

We all know how important it is to practice self-love and self-acceptance so let’s us Valentine’s Day as another chance to look after ourselves and really spend time checking in on where we are and how things are going mentally, healthwise and spiritually.

Not sure how to best celebrate yourself this Valentine’s Day, don’t worry below is a quick list of ways you can get the best out of the day.

Cook yourself a delicious dinner

Go out and see a movie you have been wanting to see, don’t worry about going alone everyone will be to busy flirting with their dates to even notice you are there let alone by yourself plus going to the movies by yourself is cool and takes courage!

Spoil yourself with some flowers and chocolates.

Treat yourself to a pamper session, perhaps a massage, mani, pedi and a fresh blow out.

Write yourself a beautiful card highlighting all the amazing things you have done this year and how proud you are or yourself.

Pick up your favourite takeaway on the way home or better yet get it Ubered to your door.

Pop open your favourite bottle of wine and load up your favourite Netflix series and binge watch the evening away.

Grab a new book you have been dying to read and shut yourself off for the evening.

Do something you have been wanting to do but haven’t had the time.

Buy yourself an extremely extravagant and expensive gift that you usually couldn’t rationalise.

Call in sick to work and spend the day in bed. (Make sure you don’t get reprimanded for this one though!)

Be a selfish lover for the evening, give your partner or tinder hook up a guide to what you want for the evening, lay back, let them put in all the effort and enjoy.

How are you planning on spending your Valentine’s Day?

Is there something special you are looking forward to doing?

Baby Hunt 2.0 Week 30

How far along: 30 weeks 6 days

Baby H2.0: Weighs 1.31 kg and is 39.9 cm from crown to rump, and is about the size of an Zucchini. Baby H2.0 is certainly growing!

Gender: Baby Hunt 2.0 is a GIRL!!!

Weight gain:+ 5.5 kg since we found out, my weight is up and down day to day at the moment so it is hard to get a true gauge on my actual weight gain. I can be up by a whole 2 kgs in the afternoon with all the fluid that my legs are holding onto.

Sleep: What I wouldn’t give to have a restful nights sleep, I am told that the reason it is harder to sleep later in pregnancy is to help you get ready for the exhaustion and lack of sleep the baby will cause ha ha great!

Symptoms: My legs are really starting to swell in the evenings, especially if I have been on them for any length of time. It is not a great feeling, sitting in the shower stretching seems to help but there is not much relief.

Cravings / Aversions: Not really at the moment which is nice.

Maternity Clothes: I bought some maternity dresses for the two weddings I have coming up but that is it at the moment. I just hate spending money!

Exercise: Yeah that is not really happening at the moment.

Mood: I have been a bit miserable lately, I am feeling a bit down on myself which is not really like me. I think its just the hormones and the exhaustion.

Best moment of the week: Levi has been talking about his little sister and he is excited. Now that he has swapped seats to his big boy car seat he keeps letting me know that the old car seat is for the baby. I cannot wait to see how he develops as a big brother.

Worst moment of the week: I started back at Uni on Tuesday night, I am taking it slow and only doing once class a week but its 3 hours after work and by the time I get home its close to 10pm. I didn’t really expect to be as exhausted as I am this time around and I am a little worried I might have taken on a little too much.

What I am looking forward to: My father’s wedding is this Saturday, whilst I am not super excited to attend as I feel like a bloated whale I am excited to see Levi in his little outfit and hopefully steal a dance with him.

There you have the week 30 recap, I am worried about PPD but I think I should be okay, I didn’t have any PPD with Levi and I have a wonderful, loving and supportive family to help me through things if I start to feel down.

Did you struggle with down weeks throughout your pregnancy?

Galentine’s Day

If you have ever seen parks and recreation I am sure you are already aware of Galentine’s Day but for those of you out of the loop, I will fill you in.

Galentine’s Day

/ˈGalːen:tine/noun

  1. 13 February, the day before Valentine’s Day when it is traditional to celebrate the people you love other than your significant other, your best friends, your best Judies, your ride or dies, your lady loves, your hype ladies.

I am especially fond of Galentine’s Day, how often do we get to sit back with our best friends and just celebrate each other and the love we have. As I get older it is harder and harder to stay in contact with friends so Galentine’s Day has become a special day for everyone involved.

To celebrate Galentine’s Day you need a few simple supplies:

Pink Glitter and Sparkles

This is obviously a pretty important requirement, nothing says let’s celebrate our shinning sisters like a little bit of glitter. Depending on your party theme mini love heart confetti and roses will also elevate a plain table setting.

Flower arrangements

Adding plenty of fresh flowers to your event will create an air of luxury and depending on the flowers will also smell fantastic. If you don’t have the budget to buy bunches of flowers just ask your guests to bring a small hand-picked bouquet with them to add to the decor.

Drinks

Whether it be champagne, wine, mimosa’s, sangria or vodka make sure there is plenty of alcohol. I would suggest spoiling yourselves with a bottle of something a bit special, the bigger the bottle, the better.

Food

You will need some food to help soak up all that alcohol so decide when the event will be held to help narrow down the food choices, I would suggest taking a leaf out of Leslie Knope’s book and settling for a brunch option.

Chocolate

Galentine’s Day isn’t complete without a ridiculous amount of chocolate consumption so make sure there is plenty of chocolate treats to be passed around and enjoyed!

Remember calories don’t count on Galentine’s Day!

Here’s to hoping that you can create a fun get together with your best friends and set out a time each year to really cheer each other on and celebrate each other’s achievements. Galentine’s Day is all about empowering women to live their best lives and have a little fun along the way.

Quick Time Saving Tips for Women

Quick Time Saving Tips

Do you find yourself winding down for bed in the evening, reflecting on the day that was and contemplating all the things you wished to achieve but never found time for?

You are certainly not alone, in the high stress, high paced society we live in it can be easy to feel overwhelmed and time can slip away from us.

Luckily enough each day brings with it a fresh 24 hours and it is up to us to truly harness the potential of each new day. Successful professionals are capable of achieving an outstanding out of work in the same 24 hours that we are all afforded, so how do they manage to find the time?

Follow these 9 simple tips that will help you get the best out of each day:

Tip 1 Wake up before the sun rises.

I know pressing the snooze button and snuggling up in your blanket seems far more enticing than getting up but trust me, you will thank yourself later!

Early mornings are the perfect time to sneak in a workout, go for a walk or maybe just a little alone time reflecting on the day ahead. Treat those precious hours as “ME TIME” and enjoy yourself, you will be far more motivated throughout the day if you have started your day off on a positive note.

Starting your day before the sun rises and before the rest of the household is up and running can greatly benefit your daily tasks. If you work from home it is the best time to sit down and tackle those annoying emails and or complicated work tasks. Studies show that our brain is far more switched on and alert first thing in the morning, so pour yourself a cup of coffee and get down to business. Early morning can also be the best time to get those niggly cleaning jobs out the way, like scrubbing the bathroom times or the windows as there are no little ones around trying to help.

Tip 2 Plan to succeed

Time to pull out your coloured pens, stickers and washy tap and practice your funky lettering. Just kidding, whilst it can be helpful to put all that extra excitement into a planner it can become distracting and time wasting, instead, invest a planner you find functional and plan the daily tasks you wish to achieve.

By organising and time blocking your day you can schedule those hard to finish tasks into times you know you are more alert and prepared, it also allows you to keep stock of what you had planned to complete by certain times ensuring that you keep yourself on track. Assign rankings for the tasks you wish to achieve for the day and allocate time accordingly.

Each evening 10 minutes planning out the schedule for the next day, take the time to think about what you would like to achieve the following day and how you would like your day to run, time block certain events with extra timing if needed for example a 30 minute trip to the dentist for an appointment at 2pm would be time blocked from 1:30pm till 3pm to allow for travel time.

Spend another 10 minutes each morning updating your daily schedule and checking what you have planned for that day that way you can are truly organised and prepared for where ever the day takes you.

Tip 3 Organise your morning routine before bed

Ever have one of those mornings where you idle around looking for a certain work shirt only to discover it’s in the wash. Eliminate that time wastage by planning out your morning routine before you go to bed at night.

Choose your outfit for the next day and lay it out ready the night before with shoes, socks and underwear all included. If possible have a shower before you go to bed so you don’t waste time standing around as the clock is ticking. If you are one of those people that have to have a shower each morning then put an alarm on your phone for 5 minutes, get in, wash and get out before the timer goes off.

Invest in a great hair dryer that dries your hair quickly or towel dry and style, wet hair looks are all the rage at the moment and will save time. Spend time on the weekend practising your current makeup look and try to bring the time it takes down, a quick five-minute look with some foundation, a bronzer as eyeshadow and contour plus a bright lip looks fantastic and gets you out the door faster.

If possible try and eat your breakfast on your commute, a smoothie, overnight oats or some fresh fruit and yoghurt are all great breakfast ideas that can be eaten on the move and can be made the night before.

Tip 4 Keep your phone out of reach

So often we grab our phone just to quickly check social media and then whoah! where did that half an hour disappear to? Keep your phone in your handbag and avoid checking it during the day, schedule in a 10-minute facebook session during your lunch break but avoid the temptation to just quickly check your phone every time to have a quick break or feel overwhelmed.

Breaking a screen addiction can be hard so don’t expect just to be able to stop wasting time on social media cold turkey, give yourself a goal that you are only going to check your phone a certain amount of times each day and slowly reduce that amount down until you are satisfied with your usage levels.

If you have an iPhone you can actually check your daily screen time which is eye-opening! Track your usage for a week and you will honestly be shocked at the amount of time wasted looking at your phone, it will create an analysis for you so you can view how much time you spend on social media and how much time you spend playing games.

Tip 5 Meal Plan for the week and bring lunch

Whether you meal plan, prep and cook your weekly meals on the weekend or just plan and shop for your weekly meals during the weekend and then cook them every night having an idea of what you are eating for dinner each night can drastically reduce time wasted arguing about who wants what and who decided last time.

Planning your weekly meals and shopping prior to cooking can also help save money and have you eating healthier too. Spend time each Sunday with your family members creating a plan for the week, if you struggle with inspiration create a theme for each night, Meatless Mondays, Taco Tuesdays and so on or check out Pinterest and the abundance of recipes for every diet type, cooking time frame and flavour combination imaginable.

It is also a great idea to plan for extra portions and take those for lunch each day, that way you don’t have to fluff around wondering what you could possibly have for lunch or sitting down to a sad sandwich whilst you watch your coworker eat the beautiful pasta they had for dinner the night before drooling with envy.

Tip 6 Avoid the television trap

Do you get home from work, sit down on the couch for a few minutes and then end up wasting the rest of your evening watching a Netflix marathon or catching up on the latest Kardashian drama?

Avoid this time-wasting trap by simply finding something better to do with your time. Put on a podcast, audiobook or some music and spend those after work hours getting some housework done. Blast some upbeat 90’s tunes and dance around the house whilst you dust, clean and sweep. It’s amazing the difference music can make to your mood and the work you can get done when you are singing along to your jam!

Tip 7 Get one cleaning task done before bed

Before you finish up for the evening select one cleaning task that needs to be done and complete it before you head off to be. It could be something as simple as putting on a quick load of laundry, unpacking the dishwasher, wiping over all the kitchen surfaces or anything that you know should be dealt with.

Completing one task per evening means that there is always something being completed and you reduce the overall amount of cleaning that you have to do at a later date. A clean house leads to a clean, and restful mind and a happier deeper sleep.

Tip 8 Give yourself some “Me Time”

Schedule a block of time each evening just for you, use this time to relax and recount the day that was. Spend time reading, writing, knitting, practising yoga, meditating or something that you find completely relaxing.

Giving yourself that little bit of time allows you to refresh, to get the best out of each day you need to ensure that you are getting the best out of yourself! You need to look after what is inside and outside in order to be the person you wish to be no matter what that looks like.

Tip 9 Go to bed early.

If possible try and be in bed by latest 10:30pm, pjs on, teeth brushed, face cleaned, lights off sleep time no laying in bed watching tv or sitting on your phone. Getting into a routine of going to bed at a reasonable time makes it far easier to get up earlier in the morning. Our brains are far less active in the evening and most often time is just wasted watching television so going to bed earlier and using those early hours when you are more alert is often more productive.

Creating a bedtime routine also greatly helps you wind down for bed, taking a few minutes to wash your face and apply your moisturiser in the same way each evening can eventually place you in an almost meditative state completely relaxing you and removing any stress from your mind which may prevent sleep.

Finding time throughout the day does not need to be a challenge, re-evaluate where you seem to be spending the majority of your time and ask yourself why this is and are you happy with what you are gaining from this experience.

Time management is a constant struggle and is something that needs to be maintained but can be managed a little better with the tips above, however it is good to remember that at the end of the day life is more important than the emails sitting in your inbox or the load of washing that needs to be folded and it’s worth saying “to hell with it all” and spending a day down at the beach enjoying yourself!

Baby Hunt 2.0 Week 29

How far along: 29 weeks 6 days

Gender: Baby Hunt 2.0 is a GIRL!!!

Weight gain:+ 5.3 kg since we found out, I am pretty happy with that weight gain. I just need to keep control over the last few months.

Sleep: Struggled to get comfortable this week and just seemed to toss and turn all night.

Symptoms: Feeling pretty good but have been battling with a bit of a upset tummy. I really feel like I have developed an issue with lactose, it seems everytime I have an icecream or a large amount of dairy I am in all sorts of trouble.

Cravings / Aversions: I have been craving chocolate all week but that could just be because I am spoiling myself a little bit and finding any excuse to have a treat.

Maternity Clothes: I am hoping I can get through this last trimester with minimal new outfits, I have 2 weddings coming up so did have to buy new dresses for them but am hoping to keep pushing through with my regular work wear.

Exercise: It has been minimal, I notice I get out of breathe just walking around the office and house so have really cut back.

Mood: I am worried that perhaps we are not prepared enough, I just feel like this time around I know what to expect so I am far more concerned.

Wedding rings: Off –  side note my engagement ring broke and I still haven’t fixed it which is why I am not wearing any rings at the moment

Belly Button in or out: It’s currently an innie, was last pregnancy as well so I am assuming it will stay the same.

Movement: She scared me a few times this week with some quiet moments but I have learnt that if she is quiet at night just to jump in the shower and that gets her moving.

What I miss: Feeling like myself!

Preeclampsia: I have had a little bit of swelling in my feet when I get home after work but the doctor told me that that this is normal and not a sign of pre-eclampsia so not to worry.

Best moment of the week: Hearing her strong little heart beat at the doctors and being told that everything is going incredibly well.

Worst moment of the week: I took Friday off as I woke up and was feeling really unwell. I had tummy issues, a sore throat, I couldn’t stop dry reaching and just felt exhausted. I had a long shower and then went back to sleep, when I woke up mid afternoon I felt a little better.

What I am looking forward to: Getting a new big boy car seat for Levi so little miss can have his old new born to 4 year old seat.

There you have the week 29 recap, I am thinking that next week I might cool it a bit on the sweets and the dairy and see if that helps to calm my stomach issues.

Did you develop dairy issues during pregnancy?

Top 5 Motivational Podcasts

Life is busy, there is no denying! I want to absorb as much advice, guidance and knowledge as I can each day but I just don’t always have the time to sit down and read or watch something.

That is where my love for podcasts comes in, I cannot get enough of some of these fabulous women. I think of them as mentors and will listen to their little nuggets of wisdom whenever I get a chance, whether it be driving to or from work, on the treadmill, in the shower and on occasion I even pop in one headphone and listen whilst I am filling paperwork.

It’s inspiring to listen to fabulous women that have sat where I am sitting and changed their life through determination, hard work and a lot of self-belief.

January Book Club

Well here we are at the end of January, it is time for the first book club review of 2019.

This month we had two very different styles of books, The Hunt Life choice was, of course, the lifestyle guide Whisky in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon. The Hello Sunshine Book Club choice was the biography of the Los Angeles Public Library fire in 1986 The Library Book by Susan Orlean.

I enjoyed both books and found them to be equally interesting and enjoyable to read. Let’s discuss the books in depth……

Whisky in a Teacup by Reese Witherspoon

Whisky in a teacup by Reese Witherspoon

Summary

This book was a quick an interesting read, it is more of a southern woman lifestyle guide than any sort of biography about Reese herself. The book is beautiful and full of stunning photographs and beautifully spaced text but is perhaps more of an extended coffee table book than a how-to guide.

Reese introduces the book as with a quick paragraph about her coming into her own in her late 20’s with help from the inner monologue southern voice of her grandmother.

Whisky in a teacup by Reese Witherspoon

The book is filled with beautiful southern style charm and interesting short stories about Reese’s youth and family history but could be considered a little underwhelming. Whilst I enjoyed hearing about the strong women that paved the way for our current generation most stories were finished in a page or two and didn’t go into any real detail.

Throughout the book, there was plenty of stunning pictures of a beautifully styled southern house, intertwined with a few How-To guides and recipes. Whilst I did enjoy reading about these great southern staples I felt that sometimes these were not necessarily relevant to today’s modern woman.

Final Thoughts

Whilst I thought this was a beautiful book I felt a slight air of privilege and thought perhaps it may not resonate with all readers. I would like to try a few of the recipes listed (I have never had sweet tea) but for the most part, I felt alienated from the book and in turn Reese herself.

Book Review Questions

What did you think about the book?

What was your favourite recipe?

Will you try to implement some of the guide’s idea’s in your life?

Are you as passionate about wallpaper as Reese?

Did you feel an air of privilege towards the book?

Would you recommend this book to your friends, why?

The Library Book by Susan Orlean.

The Library Book by Susan Orlean

Summary

The Library Book is a mesmerising look into the Los Angeles Public Library fire in 1986. I found this book quite captivating with the way it was so well written, the book tells the history of the library before the fire, fabulously details the fire and the devastation it created and takes us on a mysterious detective journey as we learn about the possible arsonist Harry Peak. Throughout the book, Susan Orlean manages to capture the magic that libraries and books themselves provide for so many of us whilst simultaneously switching to part biography and detailing her own personal relationship with books as well which was lovely to read.

Characters

The Los Angeles Public Library is essentially its own character, working as a live Beehive we learn all about the behind the scene magic that takes place to keep the Library itself and surrounding libraries constantly in motion. Throughout the book, we are introduced to different characters that play differing roles in the library system but who all come together to produce the one entity that is the library.

Harry Peak is an interesting character, as this is a true recollection of the events that took place but Harry is no longer alive to completely tell his side of the story, I wonder if we are able to get a better understanding of his true flaws. It seems that Harry never managed to live up to his full potential and lived his life as a perpetual liar, I felt that although never officially charged with arson Harry seemed like he could have been the arsonist.

Susan Orlean the writer wonderfully intertwines her own history and relationship with books throughout the story. Susan also goes into great detail about the research that she had to undertake and intimately discusses her own experiences with meeting the people involved in the library and Harry Peak’s family.

Final Thoughts

I haven’t read a book like this before and I found it incredibly captivating, Susan Orlean is an amazing writer and was able to write in such a way that it felt like part history report, part biography, part crime novel. The book really gave a sense of nostalgia for role libraries used to play in our lives and reminded me why they are still so very important to everyone.

I finished this book vowing to visit my local library with my son more often, create memories for my son to cherish, inspire his love to read and really enjoy the magic that libraries create.
